Borden sat a terminal in the living quarters. He popped the panel open, running a scan over the circuits. Lowering the scan signature meant performing a scan without anyone finding out. Sixty survivors had made it to the cave. More than half had been injured badly enough to be ineffective. If the Confed found them, they’d all be dead.

I know they’re still out there. Whitaker’s people aren’t leaving loose ends this time. Even if the ships left, he figured soldiers remained behind with a jump-capable shuttle to get them home. Or not. They might be brainwashed pricks who don’t mind giving up their lives for their insane boss.

“What’s all this?” Albert’s voice made him jump. He glared at him. “Didn’t mean to startle you so much as want to know why the hell you’re trashing that thing.”

“I’m modifying it,” Borden grumbled. “So we know what we’re up against.”

“You can’t possibly think they’re going to stick around after unleashing that kind of fury on the planet.”

“Of course they are.” Borden got back to work. “For one, they let Victor get away once. I promise they’ll come digging to find his corpse before they go home. Secondarily, I have a feeling they know about us. If not when they arrived, shortly after stealing my ship. I couldn’t exactly wipe it clean.”

“And because they believe you guys have info, they’re going to stick around.”

“They screwed up your operation. Blasted it to hell. Didn’t pay you for Rita. I’d think you’d be more suspicious too. Especially since they’d probably like you dead to avoid having a witness to their crimes.” Borden shocked his finger. The pain made him curse under his breath before he continued. “But we have better things to talk about.”

“Before you go on, yes, I am pissed. I’d like to even get some payback but I’m not sure there’s a point. If they have a fleet, then we’re done, aren’t we? What exactly do you think we can do against them?”

“Get Rita back for one,” Borden said. “Use the data they left to get that son of a bitch arrested maybe. Bring it back to my people. I mean, we’ve got options. Providing those ships you claim to have are worth the metal they’re built from. I’ll need to see them after this. Hayes too if she’s feeling up to it.”

“I’ll take you down there. What’s the deal with the other guy? Are you worried about him?”

“Don’t trust him,” Borden replied, “but otherwise, he seems like he’s on board. They’ll pursue him to the ends of the universe I’m pretty sure so he doesn’t really have any options. It’s either stick with us or go on the run and pray. They’ve probably frozen every asset, taken care of any friends or family. No. He’s with us and hopefully, that’s a good thing.”

“I’m having a meeting with my people in an hour,” Albert said. “I’m going to see who’s with me to…well, to join up with you. After what I saw, I can’t stand by and let that prick get away blowing up this colony.
